Statue of Unity, dedicated to the ‘Iron Man of India’, Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, popularly known as Sardar Patel. India’s founding fathers, and the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister. The ‘Statue of Unity’ constructed as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31.
“Statue of Unity” The 182-metre statue is the tallest in the world and is twice the size that of Statue of Liberty in New York City, which stands at 93-metres and four times the size of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, and 23 m taller than China’s Spring Temple Buddha statue.
The statue got its so-called name owing to the fact that Iron Man Sardar Patel is credited with uniting all 562 princely states in the pre-independent India to build the Republic of India.
Where Is Located Statue of Unity?
It is located on a splendidly scenic location facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam, 3.2 kilometres away at on the isle of Sadhu-Bet in River Narmada, at Kevadia, District Rajpipla in the Indian State of Gujarat, with the majestic Vindhyachal and Satpuda Mountain Ranges in the backdrop.
The Statue of Unity is the vision of master sculptor Ram V. Sutar. The Statue of Unity is built from 90 thousand tonnes of cement and 25 thousnd tonnes of iron, costs Rs 2,389 crore and nearly 3,400 labourers and 250 engineers worked round the clock for 42 months to complete the project the world’s tallest statue, at 182 Metres.
The project was announced by Narendra Modi in 2010. The foundation stone for the project was laid on 31 October 2013. It is inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on the occasion of Sardar Patel’s 143rd birthday on 31st October 2018.
The viewing gallery of the Statue of Unity has been constructed in the statue’s chest, located at a height of 500 feet, to get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding landscape and enjoy the view of river Narmada from it.
The entire statue is divided into five zones out of three are open to public viewing:
Zone 1: This is the first level of the statue. This includes the mezzanine floor, an exhibit floor and the roof. It holds a memorial garden and a museum.
Zone 2: This is the part goes up to the statue’s thighs at 149 metres.
Zone 3: This is the part of the statue, The viewing gallery, affording expansive views of the Narmada and the surrounding Satpura and Vindhyachal ranges,
Zone 4: comprises the maintenance area, This zone is not open for tourists.
Zone 5: the head and shoulders, This zone is not open for tourists.
Places to Visit at Statue of Unity
1. Visit Statue of Unity, Exhibition Hall/ Museum and Wall of Unity
A huge exhibition hall covering an area of 4,647 square metres has been set up in the pedestal of the Statue of Unity. The hall showcases the life of Sardar Patel, his contributions to the Freedom Movement against British rule and his role in the merger of princely states. The Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, the life and culture of the tribal people of Gujarat and the Sardar Sarovar Dam are also displayed through an Audio-Visual show.
2. Tour of Valley of Flowers
The Valley of Flowers is spread across 600 acres with a length of 6 kilometres from Vindhyachal and 11 kilometres on Satpuda side. The Valley of Flower has now reached up to 2,400,000 plants. There are five unique creations at the valley in the form of thematic parks-gardens namely: Garden of Senses & Panchatatva Garden, Green Energy & Upcycling Park, Sardar Park, Butterfly Garden and Adventure Park.
3. Sardar Sarovar Dam
The Sardar Sarovar Dam is the third highest concrete dam (163 metres) in India after Bhakra (226 metres) in Himachal Pradesh and Lakhwar (192 metres) in Uttar Pradesh.
4. Laser Light and Sound Show
The colourful laser lighting system is accompanied by an excellent narration of the history and life of Sardar Patel, his contribution to the Independence Movement and the unification of India as one nation. In the evening, a thirty-minute laser show is conducted every day except Monday.
5. Boating
Visitors can enjoy a boat ride at a specially designated spot on the upstream of the dam on River Narmada. The one hour boat ride takes the visitors right up to the border of Maharashtra.
6. Helicopter Ride
Visitors can enjoy the full splendour of the Statue of Unity by a helicopter ride. This joy ride of 10 minutes is truly exhilarating and gives a panoramic aerial view of the scenic mountain ranges, Sardar Sarovar Dam and the valleys around the Statue of Unity.
7. Sight-seeing of historical Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary and Temple
Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 607.70 square kilometres. It includes a major watershed feeding two major reservoirs with the Rajpipla hills as a backdrop.
8. Trekking in Zarvani Eco-Tourism Area
Zarvani is situated in the Narmada District. It is 28 km from Rajpipla towards Kevadia Colony at the Narmada Dam site. Zarvani is a beautiful lush green mountain range, water streams and waterfalls can be found. Zarvani wildlife attraction includes leopards, hyena, various species of Deers, wild sloth bears, wild dogs, rarely found in India the rhesus monkey and the barking deer or muntjac.
9. Bird Watching
Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary is one such location in India near the Statue of Unity which provides an excellent opportunity to Bird watching enthusiasts. With the thickly wooded forests and perennially flowing Narmada River, it provides an ideal habitat for birds. Crested serpent eagle, shikra, sparrow hawk, great-horned owl, grey hornbill, red and gray jungle fowls and variety of birds can be spotted in this forest.
10. River Rafting At Statue Of Unity
Gujarat’s first River Rafting activity in central Gujarat. This place located at Khalwani near Kevadiya colony and nearby the Statue of Unity. Kalyani is a name of the place which is located near the Sardar Sarovar Dam and Statue of Unity.
The river rafting will take possible 365 days of a year due to the regular income of 600 cusec water from Khalwani. From September 1st, it will be open for the public.

You can reach the Statue of Unity from Vadodara, located 90 km (around 1 hour 30 minutes by road) away, Surat to Statue of Unity 155 km (around 3 hours by road), or Ahmedabad to Statue of Unity 198 km (around 3 hours 20 minutes by road). The Statue also makes for a great road trip destination.
