RIP Ratan Tata🙏 Chairman of Tata Sons, dies at 86 in Mumbai hospital

Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away on Wednesday in a Mumbai hospital. He was undergoing treatment in critical condition and was in intensive care in the hospital for the past few days. Ratan Tata, 86, on Monday said he was undergoing a routine medical investigation due to his age and related medical conditions.

Tata, who was chairman of the salt to software group for more than two decades, breathed his last at south Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital at 11.30 pm on Wednesday.

He was born on December 28, 1937 in Mumbai, Educated at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, the veteran industrialist joined the family-run group upon his return to India in 1962, starting on the shop floor. He gained valuable experience across several Tata Group firms before being appointed director in charge of the National Radio and Electronics Co. in 1971. A decade later, he became chairman of Tata Industries and, in 1991, succeeded his uncle, JRD, as the chairman of the Tata Group. Under his leadership, the conglomerate undertook a significant expansion, acquiring notable British assets such as steelmaker Corus and luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover. Today, its diverse portfolio includes companies producing coffee and cars, salt and software, steel and power, operating airlines, and launching India’s first super app. Recently, the group ventured into chip manufacturing and is planning an iPhone assembly plant, achieving USD 165 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year.

He was honoured with the country’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.

As Ratan Tata passed away aged 86 late on Wednesday night, personalities from all walks of life expressed sadness. From PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to cricketer Virendra Sehwag and industrialist Anand Mahindra, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, prominent figures of the nation offered condolences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the tycoon as a “compassionate soul” and said he “provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest business houses”.
