Game designing is a professional field that entails the utilization of technological and narrative skills to conceptualize, visualize, plan and design each and every element of the game including storyline, game structure, characters, levels, puzzles, animation and art etc. Game designers are basically the game architects who research and analyze the customer psychology in order to create a game that offers an immersive experience to the target audience. This will ensure repeat visits and generate revenue besides referrals. Game Designers are involved in conducting a feasibility study of the game concept in terms of budgets, ROI and profitability.
Game designers collaborate with teams from varied departments like finance for budgeting, music & sound engineers, UI/UX designers, testers and developers etc. to ensure not only easy maintenance of games but also to make sure that they can be played on various platforms and also must lend itself to be adaptable to ever-evolving technology including AI, augmented reality etc.
Career Roadmap:
Game Animator: He combines technology such as 2D, 3D, stop-motion etc. with art and imagination to bring alive the characters, models etc. along with creating interactive animated images within the limits of the game framework.
Animator utilizes models or puppets, digital or hand-drawn pictures etc. to produce multiple images called frames. These frames, when sequenced together give an illusion of movement and this is called animation.
Game Audio Engineer: For a game to be successful and create the desired effect, it’s the soundtrack, audio effects and voice acting play an important role. In fact, the role of the game audio engineer has become more complex with the advent of open-ended gaming experience. He blends audio and gives sound effects basis the genre and the essence of the game, so as to create an immersive experience.
Game Designer: Game Designers are the architects of the game who work tirelessly to devise concepts and visualize, plan and design game, builds storyline, levels, characters, puzzles, prototypes and mechanics etc. so as to offer an unsurpassed gaming experience to the user. They ensure that the games are expandable, play on diverse platforms and are easily maintained.
Game Programmer: They basically bring alive the designer’s concept. Usually, they are software engineers, who code and work in different programming languages including C++, PHP, Flash and HTML etc. so as to ensure the smooth running of games on varied platforms.
Creative Game Director: He is responsible for shaping the creative vision of the game concept and ensures that the overall quality of the game is as per the overall vision of the project.
Game Artist: A game artist usually collaborates with designers, programmers as well as animators and uses his imagination and visualization skills to construct visual elements of the game.
Application Developer: He is responsible for coming up with programming code & developing programs as per software requirements.
Game Marketer/PR: They are responsible for marketing the game; basically communicating with the public so as to drive awareness about the game and enhance its sale.
VFX artist: He is responsible for adding special effects to the game. These special effects entail digitally-generated imagery to bring alive the characters, creatures, environment etc. He also must be an expert in manipulating objects and lighting in pursuit of creating the desired experience.
QA Game Tester: He ensures that the games work properly and are free of any glitches and bugs before they are released to the public.
Game System Designer: He is responsible for developing game functions by collaborating with varied departments, code developers, programmers and producers.
